SIXES ELEMENTARY PTA
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the PTA?
PTA stands for Parent Teacher Association. PTA is a designated 501(c)3 and a non-profit, non-commercial, non-sectarian and non-partisan organization whose members speak out on behalf of children’s rights to secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth. The National PTA is the oldest and largest child advocacy association in America. At Sixes Elementary specifically, our local PTA works closely with school leadership to sponsor learning resources and special programs, make improvements to our school classrooms and grounds, host family events, support teachers and staff and foster communication between faculty and parents. We do this through fundraising and volunteering.
FUN FACT: National PTA was originally organized as the National Congress of Mothers in 1897
and was the dream of Marietta, Georgia native Alice McLellan Birney. She was extremely sensitive
to the needs of the less fortunate and aspired to build a better world for children.
What is PTA’s mission?
PTA’s Mission is “to make every child's potential a reality by engaging and empowering families
and communities to advocate for all children.” Together we are a powerful voice for children.
With your help, we can continue to work toward PTA’s goal of a quality education and nurturing environment for every child.
What kind of volunteer opportunities exist?
We have Board members that have agreed to lead PTA and provide specific job functions
throughout each school year. We also have Committee Chairs, who oversee specific areas of
interest or events. Room Parents aid communication for PTA initiatives, as well as serve our
teachers and classroom students. Outside of that, we welcome volunteers for all of our events.
Take a look at our Volunteer Interest form. We will have sign-ups ahead of events throughout the year. You are welcome and wanted. Let us know what interests you – from Board positions on
down – we’ll help match you with your volunteer niche.
What does PTA do with my membership fee?
An individual PTA membership on the local school level is $6. Of that $6, Sixes PTA keeps and
applies $2.25 toward school programs. With the remaining $3.75, we pay $1.50 in dues to the Georgia State PTA and $2.25 in dues to the National PTA. Individual members may belong to any number of PTAs and pay dues in each. Every person who joins a local PTA automatically becomes a member of both the state and National PTAs. Your individual membership at the State PTA level comes with discounts at Georgia attractions and business. Member benefits at the National PTA
level include training opportunities and grant opportunities.
Why are there credit card fees when I pay online?
The credit card fees associated with online purchases allow Sixes PTA to offer an online payment option. PTA does not keep the credit card fees. They platforms that run PTA's accounting and website programs charge and retain the fees.
If the fees aren’t your jam, you may always pay by check or cash. Simply note your PTA order,
your name, your child’s name and your child’s teacher name and send your payment in with your student. Volunteers will work behind the scenes to see that your purchase is accounted for properly. Thank you for your support
